The S58: BMW's Third-Generation M Straight-Six and Why the Lineage Still Matters
From Nürburgring lap records to tuner obsession — how BMW kept the inline-six alive through three generations
The S58 is BMW M's third-generation turbocharged inline-six, descended from the S54 and S55. We trace the genealogy and why the straight-six architecture still defines M Division's cultural identity.
## The genealogy matters
When BMW M introduced the S58 in 2019, they didn't announce it with fanfare. The engine appeared first in the X3 M and X4 M — two SUVs nobody asked for — and only later migrated to the cars that actually mattered: the G80 M3, G82 M4, and the new Z4 M40i. By then, the automotive press had already spent three years mourning the S55, which itself had been mourned when it replaced the naturally-aspirated S54 in 2014. This is the pattern with BMW M straight-sixes: each generation is initially rejected by purists, then reluctantly accepted, then eventually defended when the next one arrives.
The S58 is the third act in a specific lineage. The S54 (2000–2008) was the last naturally-aspirated M inline-six, a 3.2-liter engine that powered the E46 M3, E46 M3 CSL, Z3 M Coupe, and Z4 M Coupe. It made 338 horsepower in US spec, 343 in European spec, and 360 in the CSL. It had individual throttle bodies, a redline that climbed to 8,000 rpm, and an intake roar that sounded like BMW had hired an opera singer to tune the airbox. The S55 (2014–2020) was the first turbocharged M inline-six, a 3.0-liter twin-turbo that powered the F80 M3, F82 M4, and F87 M2 Competition. It made 425 horsepower in standard trim, 444 in Competition spec, and 503 in the limited-run CS models. It was faster than the S54 everywhere except in the emotional register — which is the only place that matters when you're explaining to your spouse why you need to keep a 20-year-old coupe in the garage.
The S58, introduced in 2019, is a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-six that shares the S55's basic architecture but redesigns almost everything that mattered. It's a second-generation turbo six, not a refresh. The block is still a closed-deck aluminum design, but BMW reinforced it and added a new water jacket system that runs coolant through the block and head separately — a fix for the S55's tendency to run hot under sustained track use. The crankshaft is forged steel, up from cast iron in the S55. The pistons are lighter. The turbos are repositioned: the S55 mounted them in a hot-vee configuration inside the engine valley; the S58 moves them to the outside of the block, where they're easier to cool and easier to service. The result is an engine that can reliably handle more boost and higher cylinder pressure — which is another way of saying BMW built it to be tuned.
In stock form, the S58 makes 473 horsepower in the standard G80 M3 and G82 M4, 503 in Competition spec, and 523 in the M3 CS and M4 CSL. Those numbers match or exceed the outgoing S55 in its hottest configurations. But the S58's real advantage is headroom. Tuners quickly discovered that a simple ECU flash and upgraded intercooler could reliably push the engine past 600 horsepower with no internal work. By 2021, shops like Bootmod3 and MHD were routinely running S58-powered M3s past 650 wheel horsepower on pump gas with bolt-ons — turbos, downpipes, intercooler, methanol injection — and still daily-driving them. This is the S58's inheritance from the S54 and S55: it's the engine the aftermarket was waiting for.
## Why the inline-six still matters
BMW M has built V8s and V10s, but the inline-six is the cultural core. The architecture traces back to the M88, the 3.5-liter straight-six that powered the original M1 in 1978 and later appeared in the E28 M5 and E24 M6. The M88 begat the S38, which powered the E34 M5. The S38 begat the S50, which powered the E36 M3 in Europe (the US got the less-powerful M50). The S50 begat the S54. The S54's lineage ended in 2008, but the inline-six didn't — BMW just turbocharged it. The S55 was a clean-sheet design, not a descendant of the S54, but it kept the same inline-six configuration, the same 84mm bore spacing, and the same basic philosophy: smooth power delivery, linear torque curve, and a sound that nobody mistakes for a V6.
The inline-six is inherently balanced. It has perfect primary and secondary balance, which means it doesn't need a balance shaft — just a flywheel and a harmonic damper. A V6 needs a balance shaft because the cylinders fire in pairs that create a rocking moment. An inline-six fires in a sequence that cancels itself out: 1-5-3-6-2-4, with each power stroke 120 degrees apart. This is why an inline-six feels smoother than a V6 at the same displacement and why BMW never switched to a V6 configuration even when packaging would have been easier.
The S58 keeps this architecture and adds the engineering that makes turbos work without killing the character. The twin-scroll turbos spool fast — full boost arrives by 2,500 rpm — but the power delivery stays linear. There's no turbo-four lag spike, no sudden mid-range punch that breaks traction and makes you look like an amateur. The S58 pulls like a straight-six with forced induction, not like a turbo engine that happens to have six cylinders. This distinction is subtle but not trivial. Drive a Golf R with its turbocharged inline-four, then drive an M3 with the S58, and you'll feel the difference immediately. The Golf surges and then flattens. The M3 pulls and keeps pulling. Both are fast. Only one is an M car.
## The tuner ecosystem and why it's not optional
The S58 arrived in a moment when the aftermarket tuning scene was already sophisticated and global. By 2019, BMW M cars had spent a decade as tuning platforms — the N54, N55, S55 — and the community had figured out which parts worked, which didn't, and which combinations were reliable at 700 horsepower. The S58 inherited this knowledge base. Within months of the G80 M3's release, shops in Southern California, the UK, and Japan were running drag passes, publishing dyno sheets, and sharing ECU maps on forums. The S58 became the new benchmark for power-per-dollar in the $70,000-and-up segment, which is another way of saying it became the engine you bought if you wanted to go fast without building a dedicated track car.
The standard tuning path is predictable: ECU tune (Stage 1, approximately 550 horsepower), downpipes and intercooler (Stage 2, approximately 600 horsepower), upgraded turbos (Stage 3, 700–800 horsepower depending on fuel and supporting mods). Some tuners are already pushing past 1,000 horsepower with fully built internals, upgraded turbos, and E85 fuel. This is higher than what the S55 achieved in its tuning lifespan and significantly higher than what the naturally-aspirated S54 could reach without a supercharger or turbo kit — which usually meant $15,000+ in fabrication and tuning, versus the S58's $3,000 tune-and-bolt-on route to 600 horsepower.
This tuning headroom isn't accidental. BMW M knew what the aftermarket would do with the S58, the same way they knew what the aftermarket did with the S55 and the N54 before it. The decision to use a reinforced block, forged internals, and external turbos wasn't about warranty claims — it was about building an engine that could handle sustained abuse without grenading at 80,000 miles. BMW M has always understood that their cars live a second life after the first owner sells them. The E46 M3 is a 20-year-old car now, and people still track them, still modify them, still argue about oil viscosity on forums at 2 a.m. The S58 is being built for the same fate.
## Where the S58 appears and why it matters
The S58 currently powers the G80 M3, G82 M4, G87 M2, X3 M, X4 M, and the updated Z4 M40i. The M3 and M4 are the cultural flagships — the cars people actually care about — but the M2 is the enthusiast favorite, lighter and more compact than the G80/G82 by roughly 300 pounds. The X3 M and X4 M exist because BMW's product planners needed to justify the S58's development cost, and the Z4 M40i gets the engine because Toyota doesn't build its own inline-six anymore and needed BMW to supply one for the Supra — which means the Supra also runs the S58 under a different badge, making it the only current Toyota with a BMW M engine. This is the kind of engineering partnership that makes sense when you think about platform economics and makes no sense when you think about brand heritage, which is why we're covering it: the Supra's identity crisis is automotive culture in 2024.
The S58's most important application is the M3 CS, the 543-horsepower track-special version of the G80 that BMW released in 2023. The CS uses the S58 in its highest state of tune — more boost, more aggressive cooling, carbon fiber intake, titanium exhaust — and pairs it with a stripped-down cabin, carbon ceramic brakes, and suspension geometry borrowed from the M4 GT3 race car. It lapped the Nürburgring Nordschleife in 7:20.207, which is faster than the E46 M3 CSL, faster than the F80 M3 CS, faster than the E92 M3 GTS, and within two seconds of the 991.2 GT3. This is the S58 at its limit — at least until someone at BMW M decides to build an M3 CSL, which will almost certainly happen, because BMW has never resisted the temptation to build one more limited-run variant before moving to the next generation.
## What the S58 gets right and what it sacrifices
The S58 is faster, stronger, more tuneable, and more reliable than the S55. It's also more refined — quieter at idle, smoother under part throttle, less mechanical at low rpm. This is both good and bad. Good because the engine is genuinely better engineered and more usable as a daily driver. Bad because refinement is the opposite of character, and character is what made people fall in love with the S54 in the first place. The S54 sounded like it was going to explode every time you crossed 7,000 rpm. The S58 sounds like a well-engineered turbocharged inline-six doing exactly what it was designed to do. Both are correct. Only one makes you want to keep revving.
The S58 also sacrifices the linear throttle response of a naturally-aspirated engine. Turbo lag is nearly gone, but it's not entirely gone — there's still a 200-millisecond delay between throttle input and power delivery, which you notice on corner exit when you're trying to balance the car on the throttle. The S54 responded instantly because there was no turbine inertia between your right foot and the combustion chamber. The S58 responds fast, but not instantly. This is the cost of forced induction, and it's the reason why people still track E46 M3s even though a stock G80 M3 Competition is four seconds faster per lap.
The other sacrifice is sound. The S54 had individual throttle bodies and no turbochargers, which meant the intake note was pure induction roar — air rushing into six cylinders at 8,000 rpm. The S58 has turbos, which muffle the intake, and a particulate filter, which muffles the exhaust. The stock exhaust note is muted and synthetic — not fake, but not memorable. Aftermarket exhausts help, but they can't replicate the S54's naturally-aspirated howl because the architecture is different. This is the tradeoff BMW M made: more power, less theater. Some people are fine with it. We're not.
## Why the lineage still matters
The S54, S55, and S58 form a three-generation arc that mirrors BMW M's evolution from naturally-aspirated performance to turbocharged efficiency to tuner-friendly power. Each generation was controversial when it launched. Each generation is now defended by the people who bought one. The S54 was criticized for not having enough torque compared to the E39 M5's V8. The S55 was criticized for sounding flat and feeling numb. The S58 is being criticized for being too refined and too heavy (the G80 M3 weighs 3,870 pounds, which is 400 pounds more than the E46 M3 and 200 pounds more than the F80 M3). In ten years, people will defend the S58 the same way they now defend the S55, and BMW M will have moved on to whatever comes next — probably a four-cylinder hybrid, possibly an inline-six with electric assistance, definitely something that makes us nostalgic for the S58's twin-turbo simplicity.
The inline-six lineage is what separates BMW M from AMG, from Audi Sport, from Alfa Romeo's Quadrifoglio division. AMG builds V8s and turbocharged fours. Audi Sport builds turbocharged fives and V8s. Alfa Romeo bought a Ferrari V6 and called it a day. BMW M kept building inline-sixes, generation after generation, because the architecture defines the brand. The S58 is the latest chapter in that story. It's not the most romantic chapter — that's the S54 — and it's not the most revolutionary chapter — that's the S55, which proved turbos could work in an M car. But it's the chapter we're living through, and it's the engine that will define the 2020s the same way the S54 defined the 2000s.
The S58 will outlive the G80 M3 and G82 M4. It will be tuned to 1,000 horsepower by shops we've never heard of. It will appear in YouTube drag races and Nürburgring taxi videos and forum build threads that span 200 pages. It will be the engine someone swaps into an E46 chassis, or an E30, or a 2002, because the aftermarket never stops trying to put new engines in old cars. It will be the engine people point to when they argue that BMW M is still BMW M, even if the cars are heavier and the cabins are full of screens and the manual transmission is slowly disappearing. The S58 is the continuation of a lineage that started with the M88 in 1978. That lineage is the only thing that matters.
